The Magical Blue Maiden

The magnificent silhouette 86 meters above sea level has contributed to the national park Blå Jungfrun becoming the folklore’s Blåkulla. With daily regular tours to the island during the summer season, there is an opportunity for a visit and even overnight stays.

STONE-RICH. Starting in 2024, the boat operated by Solkustturer will depart from the Öland Quay. Here, the County Administrative Board of Kalmar County, in collaboration with the municipality of Oskarshamn, has made significant investments, as has been done with other national parks in Sweden, and created a new entrance to Blå Jungfrun as well as an impressive 3D model of the island, made of stone. Here, at any time of the year, you can see and feel the level differences that the dome of granite of Blå Jungfrun consists of. During the peak season from June 22 to August 25, Solkust offers daily tours from Oskarshamn. It is an activity suitable for most people, including small children. Be prepared for a somewhat tricky landing and steep terrain. Good hiking shoes and extra water are recommended. For those who do not wish to walk any of the hiking trails, it is perfectly fine to stay at the mooring site, relax on a rock with a picnic, and enjoy the surroundings.

The island boasts a rich birdlife, including sea eagles, and in its lush broadleaved forests, rare lichens thrive. The sculpted rocks of Blå Jungfrun were shaped by the inland ice, and the island’s numerous giant’s kettles also formed during the ice age.

The unique silhouette seen from the mainland has contributed to the island being called Blåkulla since the 1400s. Regardless of magical powers, Blå Jungfrun is well worth a visit – whether you live in Oskarshamn or are here for a short time. It’s good to know that boat trips can be canceled on short notice as they are dependent on weather conditions. The trip should also be booked in advance. From July 1st to August 20th, there is an opportunity to spend a night in a wind shelter on the mythical island. For safety reasons, you should bring food for an extra day in case the return journey is canceled. Read more at www.solkustturer.se.

Stay Overnight in the National Park

During the summer, there is also the opportunity to stay overnight in wind shelters in the beautiful Blå Jungfrun National Park and book transportation with M/S Solkust and M/S Solfrun. A maximum of 8 people can stay in the wind shelters per night, and these are the only individuals present on the island at night, apart from the County Administrative Board’s guides.

Considerations for Overnight Stays:

Book Your Visit and Overnight Stay

For those looking to book a day trip or overnight stay, reservations can be made online at www.solkustturer.se. Please note that you must book your overnight stay, even if you choose to go there with your own boat.

You book your trips to Blå Jungfrun online and pay at the time of booking. Unfortunately, if the weather turns bad, trips will be canceled for everyone’s safety. The captain makes the decision at 8:00 PM each evening and notifies it via email and on solkustturer.se.

Visitors with their own boat

It is also possible to visit the island with your own boat. In this case, we recommend contacting the park wardens on the island for an appropriate place to anchor. This is due to the swell from the Gotland ferry, which can be very troublesome for moored boats. Park wardens and guides are available on Blå Jungfrun during the summer and can be reached at +46 70-215 08 61.
